Understanding people! How often do we actually understand what is going on in the lives of people? Or, even attempt to ? Most of the time, we end up reacting to every look, every word….every gesture…

When we are in public, we expect a certain kind of behavior from people. But we forget, as we don our masks, others do, too. But a mask is a mask after all. It can slip with an unexpected trigger. And when the facade drops momentarily and the hurt and pain are revealed, we never stop to think of the reasons why that person may have accidently become transparent. Instead, we react immediately.

Understanding people is nothing short of personal healing. When you attribute a genuine reason to a person’s slipped mask, you will feel a sense of well being for yourself for having been compassionate. For having gone into the depth of a person’s psyche to recognize the soul within. What can be more elevating?

A beautiful story with a message. There was once a clever businessman who, while crossing a river, fell in. Not knowing how to swim, he started shouting for help. A traveller who was walking along the bridge thought he would help him. So, he bent down and extended his hand, saying “give me your hand”.

The drowning man said, “No, I won’t give you my hand”. The man who was trying to save him understood that he has never developed a habit of giving. So, he told him, “can you at least HOLD my hand?” the man said, “yes”, and was pulled to safety.

If we look at the attitude of both, we understand how important it is to give.

Look at us ! We are born with nothing. Then we clutter our lives as we go along. Amass more and more around us…wealth, possessions…at any cost… bigger home, bigger family and so, more space..
And gradually, the nest empties out and we are left with meaningless structures of concrete and mortar, and an illusion of grandeur sans any life in it.
And then we should we start dismantling and decluttering and looking to moving back to our roots…but we don’t. Because by that time the attachment is very intense. And we become more or less slaves to our own possessions. To let go is more or less impossible, unless there is a compulsive trigger.

I am the only one who can create the quality of my life. It is MY thoughts, MY belief systems, MY preferences, MY emotions, MY wants and cravings, MY ego, MY mind, MY level of wisdom, MY tolerance levels MY responses to relationships and events, MY ability to achieve, my benchmarks… in fact, every thought, emotion, action and the results thereof are mine.

I want to achieve phenomenal amount of success, fame and power so that people recognize me and my family looks up to me, loves and respects me. I think that this is the recipe for happiness. I think that this will improve the quality of my life because I can buy the latest gadgets, attract people through my wealth and feel a sense of abundance. Yes, I can totally achieve material abundance if I am karmically due for that success.

What I have not realized is that I need to introspect on the means I have used, the mental and emotional devices I have used to achieve worldly success. What I need to know is how much that success has been built on pillars of truth, honesty and integrity, love and spirituality. It is this that actually develops our quality of life.

The energy that is generated by a daily spiritual approach to life is unmatched by any success where the moral and spiritual strength depletes gradually. If my actions have distanced my family and friends, replaced genuine respect with mere lip service and silenced my inner conscience for ever, I am actually, slowly and steadily, caved myself in within the impenetrable walls of my own isolation. Somewhere along the way, I have disconnected my connection with my Divine source. Not only that, after all my desperate struggle to rise in the eyes of myself and those around me, I have managed to do exactly the opposite.

I should have taken into account the well being of my soul above everything else. I should have seen to the welfare of those connected with me while I was working with frenzy towards my own achievements. I should have painted on a larger canvas instead of succumbing to myopia. I should have internalized the transient nature of this world and what karmic lessons I am here to learn. I should have known that the only yardstick of a high quality of life is how I feel at the end of the day, how high my happiness quotient is and how true I have been to myself so that I can sleep with a smile on my face and peace in my heart.

Just as hugging a child is pure joy, embracing a life based on the adherence to spiritual values elevates our quality of life to a point where every breath is a prayer to the Divine energy within.

There is a famous “Indian Crab” story which I, as an Indian, am not proud of. The open container of Indian crabs pulling each other down is the story of not only the politicians but also of the modern society. Sometimes, even the thought that a land of such a spectacular spiritual heritage can demonstrate such decadence in the moral fibre on one side and on the other side, be a role model to the world in terms technology, arts, literature, fashion and spiritual “gurus”, is mind boggling and disturbing.

I can understand ambition and seeking success. I can also understand looking up to eminent people as role models and wanting to be where they are. On a slightly lower thought level, I can see why people might be envious of others when they don’t reach the goals they aspire for. But the understanding stops here.

The moment I think of who I am, this introspection mode automatically brings an awareness of my connectivity with people and nature, my karmic plan, the ethics of living, my fate and destiny and my responsibility to myself before others. I truly believe that if each one of us focused on all of these, we would not, in fact, COULD NOT be contributors of decadence in any major way.

It is typical that the churning and the changing tide of time and events in India, being perceived largely as the dawn of an era of light after a dark period, should not be welcomed by a few self promoting, subversive forces who survive on personal gain at the cost of other people and the country. This state of affairs has prevailed in India for many years. Today, however, from the grass roots, we   hear  the agitated, dissatisfied and desperate voices of the masses, determined to fight for their right to a better life, a better future, a better governance. The tempestuous fever of the multitudes must necessarily mark the beginning of the return of India to its former spiritual glory of peace, prosperity, right to equality, respect for women, moral and ethical teaching for children, dignity of labour and most important, honesty, trust and safety as pillars of society.

This might sound simplistic and too drastic a change from the current state of degeneration. But I am the eternal optimist. Life is divided into phases. What goes up has to come down. So, logically, if everything changes, this, too, shall pass. The assertiveness of people magnified by a responsible media are the harbingers of the good times to come. The growing intolerance for heinous acts of crime are evidence that this cannot go on and will not be allowed to go on anymore.

The vibrations of this earth must be raised to a higher level by each one of us by setting examples of simple living and high thinking, thereby replacing the detrimental nature of the present self seeking, commercial, ego driven and greed inspired living. India is a land of an awesome spiritual heritage. It is that energy which has carried us through historical catastrophes again and again and yet, has saved us from complete destruction. Interwoven minutely into the Indian fabric, this energy, when activated, will, in one stroke, sweep away the misdeeds of a few and restore the earlier order of an ethical and peaceful society.

LONELY VERSES ALONE

When we are born, we bring only that much energy from the spirit world which we need on the earth to fulfill our soul purpose. Naturally, therefore, without that extra energy, we are inclined to feel lonely or somewhat incomplete. The gap between these two energy levels are perhaps the reason we are born on this physical plane…to get back the balance energy , ironically, by “losing” our “I” identity which separates us from the unified – in – diversity universe..AND by understanding that each form of creation is integrated with another. Therefore, wisdom lies in transforming our “lonely” state of mind into perceiving it as “alone” time here on earth which can be used to regain the lost energy by living a life of harmony and flowing with the tide of time and events as an observer rather than an involved party ; to live as a boat on a river which can successfully navigate the river only if it stays afloat but will sink if there is a hole and water gets in. So must we swim the river of life without “sinking” into the depths of the “temporary” sojourn on the earth.
