The Bhagvad Gita explains that there are three paths to realizing the self. Knowledge (gyan), action (karma) and devotion (bhakti). Different people have the aptitude to adopt any of these paths.

As in case of all generalizations, we know this to be true. However, these paths are actually interconnected. Devotion or bhakti is the ultimate. Through knowledge and through karma, we ultimately realize that ultimate devotion and surrender are the final steps. And that comes from spiritual learning and action.

The main root of right knowledge is attachment. We are not our body, nor our minds. We are not our senses, nor the intellect or ego. We are not mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles. It is our role play that some take seriously. When you get hurt by these very people, this experience itself directs you towards the right knowledge and the right action. And then you realize that you are not in charge. You are not the doer. So, after exhausting yourself through ego driven actions, you finally lay down your weapons and prostrate before the light of the Almighty. For life is fragile. We are not in command for the most part though we think we are. And surrendering, there is nothing to DO. Things happen… and we are channels.

Sense of humor

Sense of humor! Sigh! If common sense is uncommon, a sense of humor is, too. You know, if you want to remove your blocks within yourself, learn to laugh at yourself about the very things that hurt and angered you earlier.

Today, we are so careful about monitoring our humor. Say the right things. Smile only so much. Facial expressions should be just correct. Oops! How exhausting!

Life is fun! Laugh. Fall and get up to run with exhilaration, with the wind blowing your hair away…feel the raindrops on your cheeks…

…and if people laugh at you, join them and make them laugh more! Be a free spirit…after all, what do you care as long as you are in tune with yourself? Neither our smile nor our happiness should be a bi product of someone else’s perceptions. Because I am because I am, not because you think I am.

Presumptions and misunderstandings have a close relationship. If you understand something or someone, you will make assumptions on the fact that you know and understand and can therefore, predict to an extent.

But when you misunderstand, that can be based on your expectations of people, people you could sometimes be colored and prejudiced about. Actions in this case may be misunderstood and hence, incorrect presumptions made, guillotining someone who may be more innocent than guilty.

We often mete out undue injustice in this way and should train ourselves to observe rather than involve in emotional leanings that might prevent clear thinking and damage relationships. We all live and learn. To correct faulty patterns is not impossible.

We have several layers of negativity piled up within us, stemming from the many lives we have lived plus the current one. To cleanse these, we have to be aware first. Then we need to have the intention to cleanse. It is not easy to do self surgery. You have to bare your soul to yourself. And that is a very painful process.

It can take many lifetimes if you have not reached that point.

To work with angels (the 72 layers of consciousness and distortions within us) is a beautiful way to begin the cleansing process. …provided we do it with faith and consistency. Generally, people do not have enough patience to see this process through. Or any process for that matter.

I don’t think I can ever overstate the importance of cleansing and purifying to arrive at a point where universal love becomes a way of life.

How do we live through struggle periods? Because there is no one who doesn’t have such phases. In fact, as they say, it always pours, never rains. There is a tendency to get washed away in the sea of emotional and mental negativity. It takes all the courage to keep calm and often, even that is not enough. Believe me, only an indomitable spirit works! … an actual “zid”, a stubbornness to see this phase through as a challenge and at any cost. And surprisingly, such an attitude makes the task so much easier and less painful. I am sure many of you have been there and experienced what I am saying. It is a victory situation every time. So, stay positive and watch events from the outside. Stay blessed.

Each one of us has a unique view of life with, maybe, a few similarities now and then. And all this is depicted against the constant and steady Divine Energy which provides the screen for the film of our lives. Imagine what the scenario would be if we went to see a movie and both the film and the screen were moving! There is a perfect order behind the imperfection in the world of dualities. And our uniqueness lies in the craft of living that we demonstrate in our role play….as daughters and sons, as siblings, parents etc., but most definitely as potential players within the larger canvas of our intrinsic core as souls belonging to a much higher frequency than we care to understand.

Sometimes, life presents sudden priority situations wherein the routine but important ( to us ) stuff must be put aside. So, I missed put on connecting through my daily nightcap. But the unlimited kindness and mercy of the Divine has kept me spellbound on a personal level. Some mystic laws have unfolded before me, enthralling me and telling me, this is the true nature of Creation. “The good of all is the good of one.”
I have been touched by genuine acts of selflessness from people I have not known but have known for a very long time..in fact, many lifetimes. How beautiful is that ! I am blessed, blessed, blessed. My cup of joy is full. I pray that this transforming experience must touch the lives of each one.

On flight this morning, i was reading an interview by the actor Irfan Khan. He speaks admiringly of the Hollywood punctuality . He says if shooting is slated to begin at 7 am, it begins at 7 am. And if one person is late, hundreds of messages are sent to those involved in the shoot, I imagine, because their time is as important as anyone else”s. And now let us look at our own attitudes ! Is RSVP important if you have been given the courtesy of being invited to a dinner or an event ? No, sirree..how can I tell you from now if I feel like coming or not ? Maybe, there will be a better event coming along ! Or maybe, a more important “contact” may invite me. Or, maybe, i can be on Page 3 if I go to THAT particular event…the list could be endless ! Here, the host and hostess invite first and then make the calls asking if the invited guest is gracing the occasion. Not to mention the amounts of delicacies being prepared !

I am known for plain speak but I speak the sentiments of many who don’t voice this in so many words. I mean, where is all this coming from ? Are we the same Indians, to whom consideration and respect for relationships was second nature ? Have we become so insensetive to others ? Or rather, sensetive to only ourselves ? For, we have developed this major attitude of dishing out but not being able to accept it.

Once, much to my amusement, I got thrown out of a “who is who” list of musicians because I was just unable to attend the musical evening at this couple’s place twice in a row and for very genuine reasons. It can happen to the best of us and we should understand this without taking it personally. But I was told very righteously that they don’t give so many chances to anyone. I am still languishing !

No. Really. Jokes apart, why such massive egos and complexes, guys ? A few years on this earth and the illusion that we are here forever !

Be considerate, sensitive and kind. . Just love and be loved. Care and be cared for. Connect and be connected…it is so simple.

What is loss? I might feel a sense of loss when my children leave my home. I miss them. I am attached. I might even cry at times. To what end? To what solution is not inevitability?

There is a worse loss… of losing someone “permanently”. The grief is unbearable because there is so much fear of loss built in into attachment…”I” and “mine” converts into a sense of loss immediately. My parents! My children! My family!

It is very hard to be completely detached …even impossible! There has to be a reason to shift from this status and incur less suffering…or maybe, this IS a part of the ordained karmic suffering.

But nevertheless, we have to keep reminding ourselves that everything has to pass, sooner or later. The toughest realization to internalize! The self image of being “ordinary” keeps us entangled within this cycle of attachment and rebirth.

Many have often declared stoically that they are atheists. Let them profess to be so in a dire situation or crisis! When push comes to shove and all efforts fail, “someone up there” is there to fall back on. We live in a whirlpool of theories about “God”, that unseen power. Although we believe in the goodness of God, we wage wars “in the name of God”. We think God is light but we are happy to live in the dark: dark thoughts, dark words and equally dark deeds. We think there is an old, wise being “up there” who pours over a big, black book of debits and credits with a view to punishing humans. Quaint but amusing!

We can discuss God “ad nauseum” but the truth is, God can only be experienced as popularly theorized. Those who have absolute faith in prayer and the subtle energies have been privy to such experiences as have people who consider themselves “ordinary” vis-a-vis some others who are “extraordinary”. “God! Are you listening?”

The terms “ordinary” and “extraordinary” are mere perspectives based on perceived success and failure. Just today, I heard someone say, “courage is not the opposite of fear; it is driven by fear”. Similarly, for human beings, God is driven by crisis or disaster of any kind. God is our Disaster Manager. God is one who is expected to become active when humans can’t deal with a serious, even life threatening situation. Or, this is what WE believe. Would you believe me if I said that we all have the qualities of God within us but no intention, awareness, effort or realization? What would you say if I said that if we hadn’t polluted our energies by sullying ourselves in the muddy waters of this transient world, we could actually elevate ourselves to becoming spiritual masters like the Buddha, Lord Rama, Jesus Christ and others? The buck lies with us supported by God’s grace. “God! Are you listening?’’

God can be experienced in many ways. The sudden appearance of a stranger on a lonely road who gives you a lift to your home is no coincidence. You are looking for a book in a bookshop but you pick up a completely different book, which has an answer you have been looking for since quite sometime. You are alone and depressed when a friend forces you to go out and you meet someone there who later, becomes your life partner. A long lost friend re enters your life suddenly when you are in abject need of support.

The point is, are we just staring at the signs of the presence of God without understanding or are we actually aware and cognizant of God given help and opportunities?  But simultaneously, we need to make ourselves worthy to attract the godly energy. We need to increase our levels of cleansing and awareness to actually feel God within ourselves constantly; through substantiating God by living exemplary lives of which God, our “parent” energy can be proud. Let us invite God’s grace every living moment. “God! Are you listening?”
